Kravis Center for the Performing Arts proudly announces two dynamic lectures coming this February and March featuring renowned authors exploring the history of famous women and how their decisions shaped the world around them. Starting February 13, the Kravis Center ArtSmart Lecture Series presents “A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us” with bestselling author Susan Shapiro Barash in conversation with Jill Switzer. Then, celebrating National Women’s History Month, the Kravis Center and National Geographic Live present “When Women Ruled the World” with Egyptologist and author Dr. Kara Cooney on March 11 as part of the Kravis Center PEAK Series.
Ms. Barash is an established writer of thirteen nonfiction women’s issue books, and fiction, under her pen name Susannah Marren. She has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, The Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on national television including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. Barash has been a guest on national radio including NPR and Sirius Radio. Ms. Barash presents her lecture in conversations with fellow author and entertainer, Jill Switzer. “A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us” covers how women of today are exploring their needs with a striking absence of guilt. In Barash’s revealing, updated investigation, she will discuss: How women, from their early twenties to their eighties, in monogamous relationships and marriages take a lover. How do they balance the emotional and physical aspects of these trysts? How do affairs empower them, and how affairs of today differ from those of the past.
Dr. Cooney is a professor of Egyptology at UCLA. Her academic work focuses on death preparations, afterlife beliefs, and gender studies. She has participated in digs with the Metropolitan Museum of New York at the Royal Pyramid complex of Senwosret III and the Theban Necropolis with Johns Hopkins University. She appeared as a lead expert in the popular Discovery Channel special “The Secrets of Egypt’s Lost Queen” and is a recurring team member of the History Channel’s Digging for the Truth. Her book The Woman Who Would Be King: Hatshepsut’s Rise to Power in Ancient Egypt was published in 2014, and she also wrote When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt, which was published by National Geographic in 2018. Her latest book, The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World, was published by National Geographic in late 2021. Dr. Cooney explores the reigns of powerful ancient queens to illuminate a time when women ruled the world. Often neglected in the history books, these strong female leaders were considered exceptions to the rule, but their power and influence is undeniable.
The ArtSmart Lecture with Susan Shapiro Barash takes place February 13 at 1:30pm. Tickets are $35 and includes a copy of “A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us.”
The Kravis Center PEAK Series* presentation of National Geographic Live: Dr. Kara Cooney – “When Women Ruled the World” takes the stage Saturday, March 11 at 1:30pm and 7:30pm. Tickets start at $35 and may be purchased at the official Kravis Center website kravis.org and at the Kravis Center Box Office. Kravis Center Box Office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12pm – 5pm.
